Vote Yes on Q to Preserve Our Community's Quality of Life

Our city faces a critical moment.  Our city sales tax, which voters last reapproved in 2014, expires in December 2020. Our City Council has taken action to place a one-cent (1%) measure on the March 3, 2020 ballot to renew this tax measure at its existing level. (In other words, WITH NO TAX INCREASE.)

This is a chance to renew and stabilize our city finances and to reaffirm our commitment to the unique and iconic community we love...a place of plentiful parks and greenbelts woven together by an extensive network of bike paths.  A safe haven protected by dedicated police and firefighters. A family-friendly and inclusive community with a thriving downtown, popular park and recreation services for everyone from youngsters to senior citizens, and a vibrant college-town vibe.

But we need your help to renew what we love about the City of Davis.  If the sales tax expires, the city will lose about $9 million of the city's $60 million General Fund budget which supports police, fire, recreation and parks, environmental programs, and maintenance of streets and roads and bike paths.  This campaign is not about scare tactics. But the math is simple: If we lose this much revenue, many city services and programs we now take for granted would be harmed if not lost altogether.

(You can learn more about the critical role of sales taxes in supporting city programs and services on the Background page.)

Why should you support Measure Q?

  • It does not increase our taxes.  It just continues an existing funding source that has been in place for years that helps balance the city's budget and protect vital city services.
  • By law, revenue from this measure cannot be taken by the State, ensuring that our tax dollars stay local for the benefit of Davis residents.
  • This measure will ensure that Davis firefighters and police officers are funded and ready to help, and fund projects that light our streets, maintain safe routes to school for our kids, and make our roads safer for all of us.
  • By law, essential purchases like groceries and medicine are exempt from the sales tax.

Please vote to renew the sales tax.  Via this website, you can also help provide the funding to help get our message out, volunteer to walk precincts and make phone calls to other Davis citizens, and formally endorse our campaign.  Let's renew Davis and renew the funding that helps to support the quality of life and character of our extraordinary community.  VOTE YES ON MEASURE Q TO PRESERVE OUR QUALITY OF LIFE.
